July 2008 100 Pieces of Havana
Leading artists from around the UK and Europe have united to communicate
and celebrate iconic art and culture from Cuba. The 100 Pieces
of Havana initiative has been commissioned by Havana Club rum,
and will showcase 100 artist’s interpretations of Cuba within
a One hundred hour-long exhibition in London this summer.
A diverse
range of creative talent has been bought together to create the exclusive
exhibition, designed to bring to life through modern art the vibrant
energy, passion and spirit of contemporary Cuba and the Cuban way of
life. The 100 artists have come from the worlds of graffiti, illustration,
photography, fashion design, fine art and sculpture and will use their
favourite form of art and design to convey what Havana and Havana Club
means to them. Artists include global graffiti legend Mode2, UK street
artist Kid Acne, tattoo artist Cubanbee, fashion designer Russell Maurice
and contemporary sculpture artist Jethro Haynes – to name but
a few.
100
Pieces of Havana has been curated by Intercity and will take place
from 23–28 July at the Dray Walk Gallery, Truman Brewery, London
E1.

2008 Getting on the Road
Liberation Nuts will be drumming up some fun at various festivals this
summer as part of its on-the-road campaign to drive awareness for fair
trade.
The organisation,
the first and only 100% fair trade nut company in the UK, which supports
farmers in Africa, Asia and Latin America, will be taking its ‘Liberation
van’ on the road for the first time this summer. Starting in Cambridgeshire
on 24th July it will be visiting The Secret Garden Festival and the
moving on to some of the best-loved festivals, offering free drumming
workshops for festival revelers.

2008 Smirnoff Black Screenings at Bluebird
Celebrating the best of mid-century Hollywood chic, the Smirnoff Black
Screenings will kick-start a two month residency at Chelsea favourite
Bluebird, this summer. Each Wednesday guests will be invited to re-visit
Hollywood film classics as they sip distinctively smooth Smirnoff Black
cocktails evocative of the era. The restaurant and courtyard will be
given a glamorous 1950’s makeover, including stylish sun loungers,
black and white striped parasols and staff in matching black and white
summer uniforms; all reflecting the iconic style of Hollywood.

2008 Life in Space Goes Parabolic
Lyn Hagan, director of the Life in Space project, has received backing
for a zero gravity experiment on board a parabolic flight. Cat and
Mouse in Zero Gravity will take place on 8 July, with exhibitions

Join Carol Mavor as she reads from her new book Reading Boyishly,
a story of mothers and sons, loss and longing, writing and photography.

to four boyish men and one boy - J. M. Barrie, Roland Barthes, Marcel
Proust, D. W. Winnicott, and the young photographer Jacques Henri
Lartigue - this is an intricate text filled to the brim with connotations
of desire, home, and childhood.

7 June 2008 Alston Works Open Studio - 21 and 22 June
10 established artists working from the Alston Works in High Barnet, open
their doors for the Annual Alston Works Open Studios. All are invited
to come and have a nose around while enjoying a spring tipple too.The
intention is to document everyone who walks through our doors, in a bid
to get to know the locals and the not so locals too. £1 wil get
you a small 6x4 photo booth style portrait, Whilst the pictures will also
be compiled in a montage on a wall.
